FILM FESTIVAL

Competition Guidelines


Purpose
Purpose
The 2010 Northside High School “Getting Reel” Film Festival and Photography Contest/Exhibit is a showcase for middle school and high school students. The purpose of this competition is to provide students with a showcase and a platform for their films. Students are encouraged to use their creative film-making skills to create films that entertain, inform, and document, and to submit original photographs. Students will share their completed CD/DVD or photography project with judges who will select the winners.

Awards
It is anticipated that prizes will be available. Recognition will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category. Festival Jurors may select Honorable Mention entries at their discretion. Entries will be judged according to the Judging Criteria for the production type with customized rubrics. The 1st place Overall winner will receive a trophy at the awards ceremony; all winners will receive a certificate.

1. This contest is open to students from Grades 7-12 only. Junior Category is Grades 7-9 and Senior Category is Grade 10-12.

2. Films can be submitted in one of four categories:
Public Service Announcement (60 second max)
Documentary
Animation
Feature (Comedy, drama, mystery, science-fiction, etc)
(Each film will be no longer than 12 minutes.)


3. Deadline dates are as follows:
Regular submission: April 1st, 2010 ($20)

Late submission: April 19th, 2010 ($25)

4. Timeline: Film-makers will be contacted in late April, early May. If a film is going to be exhibited on May 15th the film-maker will be notified. Winning film-makers will receive one free entry pass to the festival presentations on Saturday afternoon/evening.

5. Entrants must submit each entry on three separate DVD’s. All copies of films will be kept by the Getting Reel Film Festival. By entering this festival you are granting Getting Reel non-exclusive rights to retain an archive copy of your production for the purposes of exhibition, promotion, and education. All entries may be used on a compilation video made available to students and media arts educators to be used for educational purposes.

6. This is a “student” film festival meaning that the films are produced, directed, planned and technically executed entirely by students. The involvement of parents, teachers and professionals is limited to non-creative roles (i.e. technical advice, funding.)

7. Entrants are encouraged to create productions that consist entirely of original material. This includes music and graphics. It is strongly recommended that you hold legal permission to use someone elses copyrighted material. For popular songs, you must indicate that you are using a published song on the registration form. See the list of suggested music sources in the resources section. Preference will be given to material that is entirely original.



8. Students MUST provide a copy of the Onslow County Schools MultiMedia Internet Permission form (or similar form from other counties) for each student in the film IF YOU WANT THE FILM DISPLAYED AT THE FILM FESTIVAL AND/OR ON OUR WEBSITE.


9. Student film-makers have the freedom to deliver their message however they desire. Creativity is encouraged and strongly recommended. Offensive language, inappropriate images and slander will be considered by judges as sufficient reason for disqualification. All films should be suitable for viewing in a school setting.

10. Each film must be entered on a DVD. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK EACH COPY TO ENSURE IT PLAYS PROPERLY! Each DVD must be labeled with the film title and entrant’s name. Students may submit as many entries as they want, but each film must be submitted with a separate registration form and entry fee. The DVD must be able to play on a Mac computer.

11. Judges comments and feedback will be sent to each entrant if they submit a 5” x 7” stamped, self-addressed envelope. Please label the envelope on the bottom left hand corner with the name of the film/entrant.
